Late Drama in the Desert: Rising Rally for 2–2 Draw with Oakland

It was another night of twists and tension at home for Phoenix Rising FC as they hosted Oakland Roots SC on March 21, 2026. The match didn’t start in Phoenix’s favor, with Oakland striking twice just before halftime through Wolfgang Prentice (42’) and Julian Bravo (45+2’) to take a commanding 2–0 lead into the break. 

Facing an uphill battle in the second half, Rising gradually found their footing and began pushing forward with more urgency. The breakthrough came late, when Diego Gómez pulled one back in the 85th minute, giving the home crowd a spark of belief. From there, momentum fully shifted, and deep into stoppage time, Gunnar Studenthofft delivered the dramatic equalizer in the 96th minute to complete the comeback. 

By the final whistle, the 2–2 draw felt like a game of two completely different stories. For Oakland, it was a missed opportunity after controlling the first half, while for Phoenix, it was a testament to resilience. Down two goals late, Rising refused to quit — and in the end, that persistence earned them a point that felt like much more.
